Veterinary nurse: the 5 rights rule
The 5 RIGHTS RULE.
Being a veterinary nurse requires a lot of precision and professionalism.
When it comes to administering treatment to patients, it is a very responsible job.
For this reason, it is important to make sure you are administering the right therapy before taking action, by checking several times that all the information we have available is correct.
Fortunately, the (minimum) 5 G rule comes to our aid.
1. 🐇Right patient
It is very important to always check that you are dealing with the right patient.
It is always better to use at least 2 identification methods, namely the patient’s name and the owner’s name.
If possible, also use the number of microchips.
Another identification method is the symptoms and age of the animal. Verifying the patient’s identity is always essential.
2. 💉Right drug
Always double check the medication used.
Knowing the function of the drug and the patient’s disease is also fundamental to understanding its usefulness in the therapeutic context.
3. 💊Right dosage
It is very important to check the concentration of the drug in case there has been an oversight in the dose calculation.
Writing errors are not excluded too.
4. ⏰Right time
Check the therapy schedule indicated by the attending physician.
5. 🧑🔬Right route
Always ensure that the route of administration is indicated. Some drugs can be administered via multiple routes of administration but their effect may vary.
Others, on the other hand, cannot be administered except in a single route due to serious side effects or ineffectiveness.
At the beginning I wrote at least #5G because to these you can add the right REGISTRATION / DOCUMENTATION, the right REASON and the right MONITORING / RESPONSE TO THE THERAPY
And you. did you know the 5 rights rule?
